How the assessment period works

Standard: 12 months before birth

Normally the 12 calendar months before the month of birth count. For employed people this is the last 12 payslips.

Exclusion rule (§ 2b BEEG)

Months with Elterngeld, Mutterschaftsgeld or sickness benefit are excluded on request. Earlier months with full salary move into the window.

Effect for a second child

If full-time earnings before child 1 shift into the window, the monthly Elterngeld can increase significantly – sometimes by five figures over the whole period.
