When does the sibling bonus apply?

The sibling bonus (Geschwisterbonus) applies when at least one other child under three years old lives in the household of the applicant at the time of the new child's birth (for births from April 2024 onwards).

Please verify the current rules for your specific case with the relevant Elterngeldstelle, as transitional arrangements apply for births before April 2024 (where the age limit was under six years).

How much is the sibling bonus?

The Elterngeld increases by:

  • 10 % of the calculated amount, but at least
  • €75 per month

Whichever is higher applies.

Simplified example

Basiselterngeld: €900 → 10 % = €90 → paid: €990

Basiselterngeld: €500 → 10 % = €50 (below €75) → minimum applies → paid: €575

Basiselterngeld: €200 → 10 % = €20 → minimum applies → paid: €275

Does the bonus also apply to ElterngeldPlus?

Yes. The sibling bonus is applied to the ElterngeldPlus amount as well.

Do I need to apply for the sibling bonus?

No – if the conditions are met, it is applied automatically. The sibling's details (name, date of birth, household membership) must be correctly stated in the application.
